Philosophy

Yuko and Joseph believe in building an artistic dancer on the foundation of a clean and methodically built technique. Technique is like vocabulary, the more words we know the more ways we can express ourselves in subtle and meaningful ways. But first and foremost is that we must have something meaningful and unique to say.

We believe that technique needs to be approached in a precise and thoughtful way, using our body as efficiently as possible. It is important to work step by step so as to not develop bad habits. Once bad habits are created fixing them is essential.

The foundation of a technique must be based on a clear understanding of the proper alignment of the body. Importantly, the lift and correct placement of the pelvis. Without a well placed pelvis an expressive use of upper body is not possible, and an efficient use of turn-out is not possible. It is essential to take the time to create this solid foundation to ones technique. Once the basic understanding of alignment is understood we can make sure that the correct muscles are engaged to support and create a safe and strong use of turn-out.

Along with training the body to become strong, flexible, and useable we also want to focus on:

  • How to think, how to approach the work, how to understand and apply corrections.
  • How to hear the music, not just be “on” the music.
  • How to look, to see with an open and curious heart.

We will create a personalized program that is based on each dancer’s needs and desires. On top of the ballet technique this will include exercises as needed to help strengthen and correct imbalances in each unique body.

Through this work and exploration into using the body as a vehicle of expression we can, together, enter the world of Dance, Theater, and Art. The essence of this work is to instill and reinforce the joy that dance can bring.
